TEARS FOR BELOVED BIAFRA

What does freedom sound like? Is it the sound of the laughter in the voices of children playing and splashing water in the stream of our local villages? Is it the hollow applause and feigned thrills of shameful pride in the villains receiving unwarranted accolades and epaulets for despicable deeds done in the dark? Is the sound of freedom like the echo of gunshots in the ears of the oppressors of our people? When the oppressed scream out in pain across decades of history, do the oppressors masturbate and feel the ultimate release as they draw out life from the soul of a people? When the world shudders at the sight of gore and pretentiously covers its eyes at the sheer barbaric carnage against a defenceless civilian populace, and yet waits for a white flag from men without limbs, is that expression of freedom? When the world gives ‘thumbs up’ to a stuttering bigot who decrees that the sum of a Lugardian amalgam with zero percent combinability is a non-negotiable sovereign entity, is that the sound of freedom? When men, women and children are slaughtered like ram in their homes by cow herders and the Union of Jackals gives my people clearance to make an orderly protest on cold cobbled Wall Street, is that the expression of freedom? Or is it the sound of the whole world holding its breath and looking away while powerful bigots unchained an armed horde to go on rampage and declare that ‘boko’ is ‘haram’? Humanity as we know it has lost touch with the creator. Human life is of less value in this land than the worth of a ‘malu’s dung. Our world is dying to be saved.

The focus of the leaders of Nigeria was never upon the future, never upon noble ideals that would span the centuries. They are a fickle and forgetful bunch that waste precious years pursuing their greed and vanity, living only in the moment. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the gods of the earth have grown tired of their tumultuous existence and weary of their many failed attempts to rise beyond their animalistic limitations and have decided to bring them to silence.

When the gods want to kill a man, they make him believe that his phallus, when erect, could perforate a brick wall. These rulers have become gods in a godless, indifferent universe, with powers that are near supreme over a cerebrally impoverished folk. Their ‘politrikcians’ eliminate perceived opposition without any pang of conscience, enacting vengeance upon their perceived enemies at the drop of a hat. The oppressed masses get more oppressed and the oppressors get more free hands to subdue opposing voices while the legislators grant themselves perpetual immunity from prosecution. Human values are liberally flouted. And none would dare speak for fear of death. This is a land where infamy swaggers along the street with jaunty strides! Nigeria is ruled now by cabals who have proven to be a blight upon the universe. Today, this miserable land is surrounded by unrelenting ghosts screaming for vengeance.
